A POPULAR tourist railway has added a new engine to its stock to haul rail passengers across the North York Moors.
A British Railways standard class 9F engine number 92214 on the North York Moors Railway.
This class of engine was the last in a series of standardised locomotive classes designed for British Rail during the 1950s.
It is one of the most powerful steam locomotives types ever built in Britain and it was intended to haul heavy goods trains long distances.
The final one of this type of train emerged from the Swindon works in 1960 as the last new steam train built by British Railways.
The engine began to pull passengers on June 15 and it is expected to stay on the heritage railway through the season.
Philip Benham, general manager of the NYMR, said: "As the last steam engine to have been built for British Railways, and one of the most powerful, the 9Fs always had a special following.
"This engine has never before been in operation on our railway, and should add even more pulling power to what we have to offer.
"It will be with us until the end of October, and we hope it will help lure visitors to spend a good value day out with us."
