Speeding drivers may be offered police education course

DRIVERS caught racing through North Yorkshire could be offered the chance of taking a police led speed awareness course.

North Yorkshire Police is looking into spending £12,985 on setting up the system to cater for people prosecuted for speeding.

At present the rural force is one of the few nationally which does not offer drivers the chance to take up a speed awareness course.

It is planned at first to offer it to those who are caught travelling marginally above the speed limit such as those between 35-39mph in a 30mph area.

The course would be run for the police by an outside body and a £69 fee charged to those taking part.

It is hoped to implement it from April in a bid to educate drivers to the dangers of speeding and to reduce road casualty rates.

The subject is to be discussed at the North Yorkshire Police Authority’s policy and planning board on March 19.

An application for funding to cover the costs, if the scheme is approved, would be made to the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership.
