Volunteers needed to help oral history project

12:22pm Tuesday 16th March 2010

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to record the oral memories of people living on the North York Moors for a history project.

The Lime and Ice Project is keen to record the stories of people living in the Helmsley area as it records the area’s heritage.

Volunteers do not need previous experience as training will be given on how to record the tales.

The recorded histories are to be used in an exhibition at the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Sutton Bank visitor centre in 2013.

Nick Lishman, assistant Lime and Ice project officer, said: "We are keen to capture interesting personal reminisces of local folklore, customs and traditions.

"People’s everyday experiences can be useful in filling in gaps from historical documents or books and are an interesting and different way to put across local history in exhibitions and events."

People interested in taking part, either as story tellers or interviewers, should contact Nick Lishman by 16 April on 01439-770657 or email n.lishman@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk.
