A YOUNG cross-country runner has been praised after encouraging performances in recent events.
Matthew Tew, a year seven pupil at Bedale High School, represented the Hambleton and Richmondshire districts in the North Yorkshire cross-country championships, in Skipton, finishing sixth.
The 12-year-old’s success saw him selected to run for North Yorkshire in a match-up with counterparts from County Durham and Cumbria last weekend.
He finished second in this event and was the county’s best-placed runner.
His PE teacher Jonathan Bielby, said: "Matthew has such natural athleticism and stamina that it was no surprise he did so well.
"He has won all his previous runs in the area cross-country league and championships but stepping up a level to county standard is another matter.
Matthew also won primary schools cross-country event held last year at Catterick Racecourse.
"As well as running, Matthew is a fine all-rounder who epitomises all that is good in school sport.
"We are all proud of his achievements."
