FIREFIGHTERS were called to a hotel this morning after a blaze broke out in one of the chimneys.

Residents and staff at the Morritt Arms Hotel in Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, had to be evacuated shortly after 11.30am this morning.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a log fire.

Firefighters had to use their hydraulic platform to get water into the chimney and spent more than four hours dampening down the area.

A spokeswoman for the hotel said: “It was just a small fire and it is business as usual now. There is only a small amount of damage. The firefighters were fantastic.”
