POLICE are investigating an accident involving one of their own vehicles yesterday.

The Nissan Navara 4x4 was answering an emergency call on Saturday afternoon when it crashed into a wall outside the GlaxoSmithKline plant at Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Police, fire and ambulance services and a crew from RAF Boulmer had all been alerted following reports that a woman kayaker was in trouble at the notorious High Force waterfall.

By the time they arrived at High Force, the woman was safely on dry land.

Sgt Peter Hoole, from Barnard Castle police, said: "We thought we were dealing with a major incident, but the woman managed to get out of the water before we got there.

"She was taken to hospital and made a full recovery.

"The police 4x4 was travelling from the County Bridge, in Barnard Castle, to assist when it was involved in an accident with a member of the public.

"It took evasive action and went through the wall outside Glaxo. There were no injuries."

Anyone who saw the accident, which happened around 3pm, is asked to contact the non-emergency police number 0345-60-60-365.
