Police car on emergency call crashes through wall

POLICE are investigating an accident involving one of their own vehicles yesterday.

The Nissan Navara 4x4 was answering an emergency call on Saturday afternoon when it crashed into a wall outside the GlaxoSmithKline plant at Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Police, fire and ambulance services and a crew from RAF Boulmer had all been alerted following reports that a woman kayaker was in trouble at the notorious High Force waterfall.

By the time they arrived at High Force, the woman was safely on dry land.

Sgt Peter Hoole, from Barnard Castle police, said: "We thought we were dealing with a major incident, but the woman managed to get out of the water before we got there.

"She was taken to hospital and made a full recovery.

"The police 4x4 was travelling from the County Bridge, in Barnard Castle, to assist when it was involved in an accident with a member of the public.

"It took evasive action and went through the wall outside Glaxo. There were no injuries."

Anyone who saw the accident, which happened around 3pm, is asked to contact the non-emergency police number 0345-60-60-365.

Andy, i reckon you wouldn't be saying that if these "police people" were driving to some emergency involving yourself or a loved one.

Then you "reckon" wrong as they would not have got there, ..they crashed..Have you not read the papers lately, do you realise just how many are crashing on thier way to emergencys, did you not read about the young girl killed ? I reckon you wouldnt be saying that if they injured or killed one of your loved ones.

I had one of these clowns flash me when i was out on my motorbike last week, perhaps they should practice what they try to preach. We've had bad weather conditions and now a member of the public as excuses maybe they should employ PC's who can drive and better still be tall enough to see over the steering wheel.

Why, were you breaking the law?

Andy you are a boring tedious little individual with nothing in your life apart from criticising. Do us all a favour and stop posting inane, illogical, poorly constructed garbage. (And no, im not a copper,)

you tell them andy !,,,you are right there. i think the police need a bit more practice at driving,or a lot more. maybe they should put that job out to civilians who can drive safely. fact

I tend to agree with Andy, it will seem like always there is one law for one and one law for another. The Police as do other service vehicles are allowed on a emergancy call to wander from the law of the road, providing they do not cause any danger on the road. The interesting thing is it is not too often you hear of other emergancy vehicles in acccidents yet the police accident seems a regular common event. Also how many times have you seen a police driver on his mobile? aparently they are allowed if it is a emergancy call. Can we not say the same? I doubt it.

The drivers aparently go through a rigorous training programme to drive a police car, maybe we should make it a bit harder then only experianced drivers to start with are behind the wheel and not a young lad/lass who has only just past there driving test to start with.

Also lets face it if someone is hurt in a POLAC. nine out of ten times it is apparently the publics fault or that is the way it turns out to be as they make sure of that.

Lol , Lovedurham is so obviously a Cop or related to one, as I am . Theres always one who has to spout garbage , Would you have been so forgiving if it had been your 2 yr old who was injured "broken limb" by a Police Car answering an emergency ? Id doubt it , but hey , keep up the good work by slagging me off , I thrive on it .

If the police driver was doing wrong then he will be prosecuted, trust me theres nothing the paper pushers like most than to get a coppers scalp on their belt. but getting back to the accident the copper was going to assist someone possibly life threatening, he or she was doing their job,so they had an accident ,they happen ,it's a fact of life, they always will, dosn't matter how good a driver you are,and if it ends up as a fatal that driver has to live with it, what I dont like is wallys blaming someone when they don't even know the facts, it seems Andy has already made his mind up that the Police driver is guilty...Hmmm double standards I think

Paper Boy ..I think you need to read what i wrote over and over again , not once have I said anyone was guilty but I did point out just how many times these accident happen and sometimes with fatal consequences. So come get a grip of yourself , its you whos playing the blame card.

just a thought !. would the police driver of this vehicle have been breatherlised in this incident ?. just wondering if this cop had too many beers the night before, you know like the police like to catch people going to work the day after drinking at night.

...Andy, Billy, I guarantee you're nowhere near as good a driver as the police officer involved in this incident. I know from speaking to cops that the amount of road users who don't notice emergency vehicles, despite their blue lights and sirens is scary-they simply do not check their mirrors enough. This in itself can cause accidents because their actions on noticing can be highly unpredictable- stopping by traffic islands, blocking the road and forcing the officer onto the other side for example. All police vehicles are fitted with a "black box" which shows how fast the vehicle was going, whether its lights and sirens were on, if the driver was breaking etc...all of which will be examined thoroughly to see if the officer was driving recklessly (as the public demand their pound of flesh).I wouldn't bother driving fast if I were a cop-if you catch the criminal the court will let them go and if you have a crash you'll go to jail.

Big Dave, your proberly right but I didnt say I was, As I have had to say a few times now , I was pointing out just how many times this sort of thing happens , only 2 weeks ago a young 2 yr old girl had a limb broken by an emergency vehicle answering a call . Oh and Ive been driving for 30yrs and never had an accident , know what I mean .

...not really Andy, no.Anyone can drive without an accident at the speed limit, that's easy. Try it at speed when you're watching out for other road users who are completely unpredictable, whilst having to control the vehicle you're in.I'm pretty sure it's not so straight foward then. I'm going to wait until the reason for this crash is discovered before commenting further...which I suggest might be a good idea for all, although I feel the chances of the naysayers waiting for evidence is unlikely in the least
