Volunteer recruitment drive

VOLUNTEER drivers are needed for a scheme that helps people with mobility problems get to medical appointments.

The Health Appointment Car Scheme provides people in the Easington and Sedgefield areas of County Durham with transport to and from their appointments.

Last year the scheme, funded by NHS County Durham and Darlington, completed 4333 journeys to GP surgeries, hospitals, dentists, opticians, chiropodists and physiotherapists.

Rose Thompson, project manager at the centre, said: "The scheme is greatly valued and the manner in which the service is delivered is very much appreciated by the passengers who use it.

"We are now looking to raise awareness with people in the Easington and Sedgefield areas who might not realise that the scheme exists and also recruit more volunteer drivers to help people get to their appointments on time."

Volunteers should have their own vehicle, be over 18-years-old and have held a valid driving licence for at least a year and will receive 39.9p per mile to cover fuel costs.

They will also be asked to attend an informal interview, be Criminal Record Bureau checked and complete an induction before starting.

Housewife Lynne Goddard, a volunteer driver for just over a year, said: "I enjoy being a volunteer driver and its nice to know I play an important role in ensuring patients get to their appointments on time.

"The hours are flexible and you can volunteer as often or as little as your time allows."

Only certain people are eligible for the scheme and patients are asked to contribute towards travel costs, from a minimum 50p to a maximum £5 per journey.

To volunteer or for details about eligibility contact the Social Resource Centre, in Ferryhill, on 01740-658885 for details.
