Jail play
I REFER to your story, "Fury at
PlayStations plan for prisoners"
(Echo, May 13).
Allowing prisoners to have access
to PlayStation consoles is just the
latest move to make prisons more
comfortable for child killers such as
Soham killer Ian Huntley.
I have read reports that some
prisons provide Sky TV which many
poor and honest people cannot
afford at home. It is also well known
that drugs, alcohol, mobile phones
and even prostitutes can be
available in prison.
The National Victims' Association
is quite rightly outraged by the
latest news.
I believe the attempt by the
governor of Frankland Prison,
David Thompson, to justify allowing
prisoners PlayStations to occupy
their time is pathetic.
In my view, a more productive way
of occupying their time would be
that they should be made to earn
their keep by doing work such as
digging ditches and farm work, etc.
Under the present regime the
prospect of going to jail is no
deterrent to hardened criminals.
Keith Dewison, Billingham.
