Letters To The Editor is the online edition of Hear All Sides, the daily letters page from The Northern Echo.
Election aftermath
IT is a testament to the good sense
of the people of the North-East that
the BNP failed again to gain a
foothold in the region.
Meanwhile, some of the anxieties
upon which the far right has built
support have proved to be
unfounded.
Many East European migrants are
returning home. A recent study for
the Local Government Association
found that immigrants are not
jumping the queue for council and
housing association homes. A police
report has concluded that the
"migrant crime wave" invented by
the tabloids is a myth.
In Birmingham, where it is
predicted that whites will be a
minority in 15 years' time, leaving
no majority ethnic group, a survey
has revealed a population largely at
ease with the multi-ethnic character
of the city.
Brummies would like to see better
initiatives to bring different
communities together, but 90 per
cent have friends of a different
ethnic background and almost 70
per cent describe relations between
different ethnic groups as good.
Sedgefield is 99.4 per cent white,
and has just two migrant workers
per 1,000 locals. How has the BNP
managed to get so much support
there by stoking fears about a threat
to British culture and traditions?
Pete Winstanley, Durham.
I FULLY support the sentiments of
Neil Griffin (HAS, May 8). Former
Durham county councillor George
Burlison was a great asset to the
communities he represented.
He had the interest of all of the
villages in his division regardless of
their political affiliation. I know he
will continue to support his
community in any capacity they ask
of him.
Colin Mortimer (HAS, Mat 12)
failed to grasp Mr Griffin's point
that we have lost a good local
councillor to national politics.
George Burlison never, to my
knowledge, sent troops to war or
had anything to do with the 10p
income tax band.
He did, however, become a highly
effective chairman of corporate
parenting for looked-after children,
reinforced by his knowledge of the
subject as a social worker.
It is ironic that we find he is being
replaced by the very Liberal
Democrat group that spent our
money, and their time and effort in
trying to prevent the formation of
the unitary authority they find
themselves elected to. Is that
commitment or pure hypocrisy?
Terry Moderate, City of Durham
and Framwellgatemoor Parish
Councillor (Independent).

Well said Terry, time will tell ,whether Cllrs.Crooks and Wilkes can deliver what they say in their election material, the Lib Dems have a lot to live up to and somehow I don't think they will come close.

Terry Moderate misses the point ,G Burlinson stood as a Labour Party Candidate and must therefore be judged as such. National politics are inter linked with local politics. If G Burlinson is such a caring " people" person then there are countless charities which would utilise his time and experience.
Mr Moderate you have received my vote under the banner of an Independant candidate your eulogy of the Labour party candidate makes me wonder are you truly independant?

Most people who post comments are prepared to give their name but you do not. Why?
If you are not willing to give your name then your comments cannot be taken seriously.
So are you brave enough?

Why does John Routledge feel that he has to know the name of "Rosiebabie"?"If yopu are not willing to give your name then your comments cannot be taken seriously". Why not.Did he not read books by Mark Twain when he was younger? ---or did he not take them seriously as it was not his proper name

Yes I did read books by Mark Twain and they were fiction and not to be taken too seriously.
Actually I was indulging in a bit of "leg pulling" and therefore withdraw my comment before it all gets serious and somebody gets upset.
