Letters To The Editor is the online edition of Hear All Sides, the daily letters page from The Northern Echo.

School uniform

AM I the only parent in Newton Aycliffe with a child/children who attends Woodham Comprehensive who is utterly flabbergasted at the price and expense that the introduction of their new uniform is going to put people like us under.

Having recently received the price list from their suppliers - Rawcliffes of Stockton - I added up the cost of the new uniform based on one item each - ie, one polo shirt and one sweatshirt each, also the full PE kit that the boys are expected to wear - totalled a staggering £67.

I only have two children. What about those parents with more than two, either already attending or starting in September?

The school insists that both polo shirts and sweatshirts bear the school logo, even though, most of the time, the polo shirts will be covered either by the sweatshirt or a jacket.

The financial strain this is going to put on low-income families far outweighs other difficulties like constant washing and kids growing, etc.

Come on Woodham, have a heart!

Louise Laing, Newton Aycliffe.

I agree totally with this lady's comments, as do most other mothers i have spoken to with children who will start woodham in september, having spoken to the uniform shop i was stunned to hear each t-shirt costs £7.99 for a age 11-12!! There is no need to put so much financial pressure on families, what harm would it do to allow the children to wear plain polo shirts? something us parents could pick up for a fraction of the price?!

There is an easy solution. As many as possible turn up in a cheaper T- shirt without the logo. Surely as long as they are the correct colour and are clean and tidy - why all the fuss over a logo? I can understand it being neeeded on a school blazer but not a PE T-shirt.
