Letters To The Editor is the online edition of Hear All Sides, the daily letters page from The Northern Echo.

Economic pitfalls

IT doesn't seem to dawn on Gordon Brown that people expect the ruling party to run a productive national economy - and they expect to benefit from it.

The way New Labour has run the economy only benefits the few.

Take our schools and hospitals.

Many hospitals are now paid for by the private sector - the only companies which are making money from our improved national economy. The people who use them have to put up with everreducing standards, ward closures and services moved so that they have to travel further for treatment.

Schools are large and impressive, but business says they are not turning out the educated people it wants.

The national housing waiting list stands at 1.6 million and still Mr Brown blocks councils from building new houses, but promises that more houses will be built. His fear is that more houses will bring the prices down further and make more vote for other parties.

Peter Dolan, Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham.
