World economy
FIVE recent news items leave you in
despair about world economics.
1. Obviously, petrol prices are
through the roof and it won't be
long, on current trends, before
running a car is impossible for
people on low, or even moderate,
incomes.
2. Many small businesses are
facing ruin because of petrol prices.
3. Abroad, including Haiti, next
door to the US, children are starving
because the grain that should be
feeding them has been diverted to
the production of biofuel.
4. The oil companies' first quarter
profits are at record levels.
5. Some people in this country
actually have personal assets of
more than a billion pounds.
Beat that for iniquity and
injustice. Destructive global trends -
social, economic, environmental -
are not the fault of ordinary people
struggling to make ends meet.
They're the fault of the greedy and
callous over-privileged few.
