Murder accused 'was in house before fatal fire'

A TEENAGER accused of murdering his two sisters in a house fire has admitted he was inside the property before the blaze started.

But Shane Spence, 18, told police he was inside his family home at Lisle Road, South Shields, for only about five minutes, looking for a CD, and left when he could not find it.

Prosecutors claim Spence started the blaze which killed Demi Jade, 12, and Tatum Leah, 14, in April last year.

Mr Spence denies the claim and denies two charges of murder and two of the attempted murder of his parents, John and Anita, both 37.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Spence told police he went into the house to look for a CD.

He said he crept into the house quietly to ensure he did not wake his family.

He told officers in interview: "I was looking for the CD and I couldn't find it."

Mr Spence denies two charges of murder and two of attempted murder. The trial continues.
