Murder suspect turned from 'toe-rag' to 'really good dad'

MURDER suspect Shane Spence turned from a "toe-rag" into a "really good dad" after his girlfriend became pregnant with his baby, a court was told yesterday.

Dennis Bruce, the father of Mr Spence's former girlfriend Lorraine, told Newcastle Crown Court that the 18-year-old "changed for the best" during the pregnancy.

Mr Bruce said he initially thought Mr Spence was a "bit of a toe-rag", but that he was "spot on" with his daughter during their relationship.

Mr Bruce said Mr Spence never mistreated or was nasty towards Lorraine, but he did accept the relationship was on and off, as with many young couples.

Mr Spence denies murdering his two sisters, Tatum Leah, 14, and Demi Jade, 12, in a fire at their home in Lisle Road, South Shields, South Tyneside, last April. He also denies two charges of attempting to murder his parents John and Anita, both 37.

Mr Bruce told police in a statement: "Shane has been spot on and you couldn't really ask for anything more from a young lad.

"He reacted brilliantly and has been a good partner to Lorraine and to be fair is a really good father. The baby's face lights up when Shane walks into the room."

The trial continues.
