Jenny killer to appeal against murder conviction
MURDERED: Jenny Nicholl
MURDERED: Jenny Nicholl

THE father-of-two found guilty of murdering Richmond shop worker Jenny Nicholl is to appeal against his conviction.

Barristers acting for David Hodgson have told The Northern Echo they have asked for leave to appeal.

The 48-year-old was found guilty last month of murdering the Richmond teenager in June 2005.

Hodgson was sentenced to life in prison and told he must serve a minimum of 18 years.

Jamie Hill QC, who represented the unemployed gardener during the six-week trial at Teesside Crown Court, said: "We have submitted grounds for appeal against conviction.

"We are currently waiting to hear if leave has been granted and don't expect to hear anything for several weeks."

If a High Court judge gives leave, the case will be heard at the Court of Appeal.

The court has the power to quash the conviction or order a retrial, if it believes the verdict was unsafe.

Last month, a jury of six men and six women reached a unanimous verdict of guilty.

The jury was told by the prosecution that Hodgson murdered Jenny during a camping trip.

The court heard he had been having a relationship with the 19-year-old for several years.

Prosecutors suggested Hodgson may have become jealous after his brother, Robert, began a relationship with the teenager.

Judge Mr Justice Openshaw branded Hodgson a devious liar before passing sentence.

He said the defendant had lied to police throughout their investigation and to the jury during the court case.

Jenny's parents, Ann and Brian Nicholl, have vowed to continue searching for their daughter's body.
