Caving Death Inquest
Verdict expected in cave tragedy inquest
A VERDICT is expected today on
the death of teenager Joseph Lister
in a caving accident .
The youngster died on a school
trip to Manchester Hole Cave, in
Upper Nidderdale, in the Yorkshire
Dales.
He was one of 11 Tadcaster
Grammar School pupils and three
adults on the trip, in November
2005.
As they explored the 500-metre
cave, run by Bewerley Park Centre,
it was engulfed in freezing water.
An inquest in Harrogate heard
several of the stranded party used
airpockets in the cave system to
survive. Joseph, 14, drowned as
tried to make his way through a
section of cave called The Crawl.
Coroner Geoff Fell will sum up
the case this morning and will
then send out the jury to debate
the evidence.
