Ghost Ships
Decision due on shipyard recycling
THE long-running saga over plans to scrap so-called "ghost ships" could be resolved next week.
Hartlepool Borough Council confirmed yesterday that a date had been set to consider four applications from Able UK, relating to the development of its Graythorp site on the outskirts of Hartlepool.
Three planning applications and a hazardous substances consent application will be considered by the council at a meeting open to the public in Hartlepool Civic Centre at 10am on Thursday.
The main planning application covers a range of proposals to extend the use of the site to include the construction, repair, refurbishment and decommissioning of all types of ships, vessels and other craft, and for the manufacture of wind turbines.
The application also covers a variety of other work, including the construction and refurbishment of quays, the construction of a cofferdam and new dock gates, the installation of a railway track, construction and operation of metal recycling facilities and the creation of industrial and warehouse buildings.
There are three further applications, two of which relate to alternative options for the installation of a cofferdam and an application for hazardous substances consent.
Councillors are being recommended to approve the applications subject to appropriate safeguards.
