Budget 2008
Expert calls for action on the environment
A NORTH-EAST expert is calling
for the Government to act
now to protect the environment
for decades to come.
Dr Chris Ennis, sustainable
technology project officer at the
Clean Environment Management
Centre, at Teesside University,
said: "Clearly, climate
change is a major concern and an
environmental priority, not just
for the budget but in terms of
going forward. Obviously, there
is nothing we can do to make a
difference in the short term, but
this Budget and the one next
year will be very important. It is
important we get our act together
and make it a priority.
"We need to take action to
maintain our international
standing. There has been a lot of
talking about this issue and we
need to maintain a strong
image."
Dr Ennis' job involves looking
at the issues behind improving
the environment for businesses,
including environmental audits
and carbon management.
He said: "I think they need to
actively encourage people to
look at their carbon footprint. I
think there should be more
money available to change these
things, as it is important to be energy
efficient."
