Entrant: Passion for food drives business on

After years dreaming, Nicole Race, 33, from Darlington, took the plunge last year and created gourmet food venture New Tastes. Mother-of-two Mrs Race, who has entered the If We Can, You Can challenge, tells her story

"IN my early 20s I attended a management training week. One of the main features of this week, which 12 years later I would still describe as my defining moment, was a session on goal setting and motivation.

"I genuinely get goose-bumps when I think about the session. I knew that I needed this in my life and have been passionate about self development and goal setting since.

"I established my business, New Tastes, in December last year. Based in Darlington, I source and sell unusual gourmet foods. Products are sourced from around the world, this country and many are locally produced.

They are high-quality, many are organic and most are additive free.

"It is my passion for food that has driven me forward.

"I have always wanted to work in the food industry, but knew that I wouldn't be able to work for somebody else.

"I felt that I needed to be able to express myself and to see my ideas evolve and become a reality. The main hurdle I faced was not what to do, but how to do it. My original dream involved a delicatessen cafe, but I have young children and I wanted to avoid feeling torn between children and the business.

"I needed to ensure that I had maximum flexibility.

"I have received encouragement and advice from my family and friends, particularly my husband, Neil, who is the brains behind the financial side of the business. Some of the best advice I have received has been from other business people."
