Case Study: Nickie Gott
AS a 30-year old mother-of-two, Nickie Gott had no formal qualifications or a career to return to after pregnancy.
Drifting through a series of sales jobs that gave no satisfaction, and with her second child in and out of hospital, she was stuck in a rut. She knew something had to change.
"I was walking with my daughter through a local playground.
It was pretty rundown and she said to me, 'Mum, this place is awful, why has nobody put any swings in here?'
"I felt as though I could do something to help so I started fundraising and organising to get the money to install some swings."
Inspired by this voluntary work, Ms Gott knew she could make a worthwhile and fulfilling career out of her hobby.
Helped and supported by her husband, Ian, she completed a personal development course and set herself five life goals to achieve within ten years, one of which was to run her own business.
In 2002 she set up She's Gott It!
an event management and marketing company, in Durham.
"I had half our garage carpeted and just worked from there for the first 14 months, " she said.
After five years of successful trading, the company has delivered a number of national and regional events and moved to larger premises.
The If We Can You Can challenge aims to nurture emerging entrepreneurial talent - of all ages and backgrounds - and recapture a spirit of enterprise in the North-East.
