CHILDREN at a holiday club have been learning the basics of first aid to prepare them for a range of eventualities.

About 30 youngsters took part in a session held by Big Hands Little Hands Childcare at Bishop Ian Ramsey School, in Medomsley. Magpie Training came along to teach the children everything from how to call the emergency services to bandaging, while older children learned CPR.

Big Hands Little Hands Childcare owner Bev Lowes said: “I got the idea when I saw that Northumberland County Council putting their children through first aid training in school time and it wasn’t being offered here n Derwentside.

“So thought why not get our children involved. We started fundraising to get the training, when Magpie Training got in touch with us and offered to put on sessions free of charge.

“The catch was they do adult first aid training and have never taught children before, so the last over last couiple of months we ahve been working with them putting a package together to tailored for children.

The club run at Bishop Ian Ramsay School was for children from Derwentside and beyond.

Training will be provided to 150 more children on over the next couple of holidays.
