CAMPAIGNERS determined to protect services at Darlington Memorial Hospital took their cause to the streets yesterday.

Earlier this year, MP Jenny Chapman launched Save Our Services (SOS) after becoming concerned about the impact of potential changes to services at the hospital.

Ms Chapman and supporters believe the contentious Better Health Programme could mean downgrading of DMH’s maternity, intensive care and A&E departments.

The programme is currently subject to a consultation period with hospital chiefs insisting no decisions have been made on the future of services at the hospital.

On Saturday, SOS supporters took to High Row to gather signatures on a petition outlining strong opposition to any potential downgrading of services at DMH.

Ms Chapman said: “We’ve been asking residents to resist any reduction in services.

“We’re also encouraging people to become members of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust so that they can vote on this issue.

“The next consultation event is in November and between now and then, we need as many people as possible to join us.”
