EXPERTS will discuss the signs and symptoms of a life-threatening condition at a free event next month.

Every five minutes a person dies from sepsis, a condition that is said to claim more lives than bowel and breast cancer.

To raise awareness of the condition, the County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust will host a Meet the Sepsis Experts session in Darlington Memorial Hospital’s Education Centre on Wednesday, September 7 from 6.30pm.

Alyson Robinson, sepsis education nurse, said: “In sepsis, the body’s immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight an infection and this can reduce the blood supply to vital organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys.

“Sepsis is usually triggered by an infection or injury and we want to alert people to how quickly it can take hold.

“Early medical intervention is essential so the greater awareness there is of what to look out for, the more lives can potentially be saved.”
