FOOTSORE football pundit Jeff Stelling achieved his own special goal tonight (Wednesday, March 30) after completing an epic 262 mile walk in just ten days.

The Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday presenter and Hartlepool United fan, who walked 26 miles each day, surpassed his target of raising £300,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

His original aim was to raise £100,000 but tonight (Wednesday) he total stood at £302,099 - with more money expected to flood in.

The 61-year-old was joined along the route - which took in 25 football grounds - by various famous footballing faces including Ray Wilkins, Craig Hignett, Charlie Nicholas, Les Ferdinand, Archie Gemmell and Paul Merson. The Northern Echo:

Mr Stelling, who began the 'Men United Walk' from Hartlepool's Victoria Park ground, where he is honourary president, was still in good spirits as he reached the Wembley Stadium finish line.

Asked what he was most looking forward to, he said: "A hot bath, putting my feet up and not walking any further. At the moment I am even concerned about taking my dogs out!"

He told The Northern Echo: "It's been incredibly difficult and I'm a bit sore but I've had great support from lots of people along the way.

"It's great that so many football people have turned out and given their time to help promote this."

He admitted he had never tackled such a feat before but, apart from a few hours of pouring rain courtesy of Storm Katie, "things have been fantastic".

Mr Stelling was joined on the final leg from AFC Wimbledon to Wembley by former Southampton defender Francis Benali, former England and Chelsea star Denis Wise and the chief executive of Prostate Cancer UK, Angela Culhane.

She said: "Jeff is so well known and absolutely well loved by all soccer fans so he is the ideal person to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

"We want to make sure we have the right treatments for the right sort of tumours and better tests to diagnose it earlier."

Journey's end outside Wembley

Pools chief executive Russ Green also walked every step of the way with Mr Stelling, who said if his team could not make it to Wembley, at least he had succeeded in doing so.

However, he admitted that at the start of the challenge he was unsure which way it would go.

"It is a massive accomplishment. But if someone had told me, any time after the first four days, that I would make it, it wouldn't have believed them.

"It has gotten progressively easier, rather than harder."
