A NORTH Yorkshire hospital is set to get a complete makeover in a bid to modernise the facility and ensure it is sustainable for the future.

Healthcare design specialist Medical Architecture, based in Newcastle, impressed a panel of clinical and technical experts from NHS Property Services and Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group, and won the tender to remodel Whitby Hospital.

The hospital, which is Whitby’s local community hospital, provides inpatient, outpatient and community services to the town and surrounding area.

Medical Architecture is behind designs for 50 new build hospitals and specialist healthcare facilities as well as more than 100 refurbishments of existing buildings around the world.

They will now be tasked with drawing up plans to ensure the hospital can continue to provide first class healthcare for the people of Whitby in the future.

Dr George Campbell, HRW CCG vice chairman and Whitby GP, said: “This is a very positive step forward in the remodelling of Whitby Hospital, which helps us achieve our aim of a sustainable community hospital in Whitby which provides high quality, appropriate services that local people can be proud of.

“We will be engaging with members of the public, patients and staff to get them more involved so they can have their say on the design of the remodelled hospital.”

Paul Yeomans, director at Medical Architecture, said: “We are delighted to be engaged as architect for the remodelling of Whitby Hospital.

“This project has unique challenges and opportunities. It offers us the prospect of providing the local community with the best modern environment for treatment and care.”
