MENTAL health workers have issued a reminder to people who feel the coming New Year offers little to celebrate that help is available.

Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust looks after people with mental health issues and disabilities and is campaigning to help people cope with what is for some a difficult time of year.

Chief executive John Lawlor said: “December and January are marked by celebrations, parties and festivities. However some people experience a much bleaker time through no fault of their own.

“We know that depression can hit people at any time of year, but the stress and anxiety of the festive season can cause some people to experience a feeling of loneliness and a lack of fulfilment more intensely.

Social isolation, feeling lonely, is common with depression and this too can be worse during the festive season.

“Sometimes chatting to a friend or spending time with family can help, at other times nothing seems to help and people need a little more support.

“This is where we, and partner organisations such as the Samaritans, can make a difference.”
