A HOSPITAL in the North-East is becoming one of the world’s leading training centres for specialists in gynaecological cancers, with medics from around the globe honing their surgical skills in Gateshead.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Gateshead, is home to NGOC (the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre) a specialist centre which treats women in the North-East and North Cumbria suffering from gynaecological cancers.

The facility has such a good reputation it now become one of the world’s leading training centres for other consultants specialising in this field, with doctors from as far afield as the United States coming to study here.

The centre has carried out UK and world-first training events that help medics from around the world develop complex surgical skills and advanced procedures for women with gynaecological cancers.

Mr Raj Naik, consultant gynae-oncologist at the QE said: “In Gateshead we’re really proud to be at the forefront of national and international training in this area. The Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre has hosted a wide range of training courses, workshops and International conferences within the department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

“We have welcomed delegates from all corners of this country and the rest of the world, reflecting the very high regard each of the consultants at the NGOC have within the professional community. The work we’ve been doing with colleagues from around the world is helping shape our knowledge of the disease and improve the care we provide to women here in the UK.”
