38th Beamish Trophy Trial
OWNERS of dozens of motorcycles from yesteryear braved the elements at the weekend for an annual ride around the rural roads of the North Pennines. The 38th Beamish Trophy Trial took in 120 miles of the dales, with motorcycles and threewheelers built before 1980 taking part. Trial secretary Tom Norman, of organiser the South Durham section of the Vintage Motorcyle Club, said: “It was a bit damp, but everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. “There were a number of people who had never been to this part of the country before. They were quite taken with the countryside, even though it was misty.” Although prizes were awarded, the emphasis was on those taking part enjoying a fun day running their machines over a pleasant rural route. Mr Norman said of 120 starters, 105 had made it to the finishing line. This year’s oldest machine dated from 1927 and the youngest from 1979. Starting and finishing close to Esh, near Durham City, participants head up Weardale, in County Durham, crossing briefly to Alston, in Cumbria, before returning via the traditional lunch stop at the Allenheads Inn, in Allenheads, south-west Northumberland.
