29th Bupa Great North Run
Sunday, September 20, 2009: A record-breaking Great North Run saw 54,000 people take to the streets of Tyneside. The Red Arrows has a backdrop of brilliant blue skies as they completed their traditional flight over the Tyne Bridge. Elite athletes, fun-runners and celebrities including model Nell McAndrew, chef Gordon Ramsay and Eastenders actor Joe Swash tackled the course from Newcastle to South Shields. Kenyan Martin Lel regained his Great North Run title, crossing the line in the men's race in 59 minutes and 32 seconds. The women's title went to Jessica Augusto, of Portugal who finished in one hour, nine minutes and eight seconds.
