More than 1,100 participants made the third annual Durham Big Ride, the biggest yet. More than 100 cyclists defied officials who forced the cancellation of an endurance bike ride by tackling The Beast, a 50-mile route added to this year's event. No accidents or injuries were reported and organiser Colin Wilkes said: "A number of people who would not normally turn out for 25-mile rides came because they know what a good event it is. It's been excellent."
