REGARDING the article headlined "Penalties for illegal waste dumping" which concerned two men being fined when they were prosecuted by Durham County Council for illegally dumping waste (Echo, June 5).
I know fly tipping is wrong, but I have to give a thought to the prices that councils charge to take rubbish away.
It is the same price whether you are working or not. Some people don’t get much on benefits and I think it’s totally unfair that they are charged the same as working people. This is what is causing fly tipping.
The council says that it costs hundreds to clear it up, so if the councils made waste removal free to people on lower incomes, then they wouldn't need to fly tip and it wouldn’t cost the councils as much to clear it all up. That would be a win-win situation all round, I think.
