THOUSANDS of people in the North-East are being encouraged to spend a night in nature’s home next month by taking part in the RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout.

Running from August 7 to 9, the event – which is now in its third year - encourages families to sleepout overnight and find out which creatures they share their homes with, while raising money to help protect them.

RSPB Saltholme, near Stockton on Tees, will also be hosting a Big Wild Night Out on Saturday, August 8, from 7.30 pm, when the reserve team will be offering visitors an exclusive chance to explore the reserve after closing time.

Booking is essential for this event, which costs £8 for adults (RSPB members) and £10 for adult non-members, and £4 for children (RSPB members) and £5 for children non-members.

Please contact the visitor centre for more details by emailing saltholme@rspb.org.uk or call 01642-546625.

Sarah Houghton, Big Wild Sleepout organiser, said: “Whether you’re camping in a back garden or attending your local RSPB reserve event, we hope that thousands of people will be getting closer to nature and be inspired to help save it.

“Some of our best loved garden favourites are among the creatures shown to be in serious trouble and by taking part in this fun outdoor activity; we’re making the nation aware that nature needs our help.”
