A VICIOUS animal has been blamed for savaging a flock of sheep, killing 20 of them.

A farmer in Darlington was left “alarmed and saddened” after finding a number of sheep had been left dead and injured on his land.

The owner of the flock came upon the horrifying scene in the early hours of Monday, December 8.

Police believe a vicious animal – possibly a dog - had been allowed to run wild among the flock of sheep, causing the fatal injuries.

The incident happened at a farm situated close to Barmpton Grange Cottages on the outskirts of Darlington.

It is now the subject of a police investigation. Sgt Simon Cowan of Darlington Police said: “I am appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact us.

“The animal involved would have been exhausted after such a prolonged attack and would have been covered in blood.”

While the animal responsible has not been found, police believe a dog may have been responsible for the savage attack.

The RSPCA has now joined the police in urging dog owners to keep their pets under control while around livestock.

Sgt Cowan said: “It is very possible that a dog inflicted the injuries. I would urge owners to keep their dogs on leads around farming fields and ensure they have control of them at all times.”

Urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward, RSPCA Chief Inspector Mark Gent echoed the police’s concerns.

He said: “Owners should be responsible when walking their dogs.

“People should know, when around livestock and particularly sheep, that they should keep their dogs on leads.”

Anyone with information about the attack should contact police on non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
