ROBOTS used to create some of the highest grossing films of all time are now helping students at a North-East college.

Kuka Robotics UK provided two Agilus robots for Middlesbrough College’s STEM centre.

The robots, which are being used in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, will help the students to learn how to programme technology for use in industry, including in automotive manufacturing, logistics and mechanical engineering.

Kuka's products are used to mount camera equipment which films live action sequences and have been used to create films such as Fast and Furious and Die Another Day.

Middlesbrough College teaching staff has been to Kuka’s specialist UK training facilities to be schooled in how to operate the technology by robotics experts.

The robots have been designed to carry out tasks including welding joints and pouring a glass of juice.

Phillip Dawson, technical trainer at Middlesbrough College’s STEM Centre, said: “Having the KUKA robots in the STEM Centre is a real asset for our students.

“They are the latest machines, and exactly the kind our learners will encounter in the workplace – whether it’s on the factory floor of a car manufacturer or the picking facility in a warehouse.

“Getting to grips with the programming and application of robots means our students are being equipped with high level skills, in demand by employers.”

Kuka Robotics has been established in the UK for more than 30 years and is one of the leading manufacturers of robotic systems in the world.

The company has made more than 85,000 robots to be used in various industries, including aerospace and automotive.

Tara Baker, business development and marketing at KUKA Robotics, said: “It’s great to get our technology in front of learners so they can see exactly what robots are capable of, and to dispel some of the myths that robots are here to ‘steal’ jobs.

“Our technology is an enabler for people to reach highly skilled work, and it supports industry in becoming more efficient and profitable.

“We recognise the STEM Centre as an industry-leading institution, and one where we’re proud to see KUKA products."
