A TOWN mayor has used a watering can to open a school's eco-garden.

Bishop Auckland Mayor, Councillor Lee Brownson, officially poured life into an outdoor water recycling project at Woodhouse Community Primary School, Bishop Auckland, on Thursday, July 16.

Working with Northumbrian Water and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust the school created a rain garden and sustainable drainage system which includes raised flower beds, a water butt, bog garden, wildlife pond and wildflower areas.

The project helps them learn of the importance and management of water in the natural world.

Cllr Brownson said: “This scheme is educating children about recycling water and its associated benefits.

“I have never opened a place in this way before. I normally do it by cutting a red ribbon.”

The project aims to reduce surface water from around school buildings and relieve pressure on the neighbouring drainage system.

Headteacher Tracy Page said: “Working together, the children have learned about and, in turn, taught parents and carers about the need for sustainable drainage in the local community.”
