TRIBUTES have been paid to a father who died after being assaulted at his home.

Father-of-two Jonathan Gilbert spent ten days in hospital after the attack at his home in Crook, County Durham, on Friday, April 20, but died without regaining consciousness on Monday night.

Christopher Morgan from Consett was arrested and charged with wounding with intent following the attack.

The 24-year-old, of Thornfield Road, The Grove is due back before Durham Crown Court on July 6 having been remanded into custody.

Mr Gilbert, who lived alone on Sycamore Gardens in Crook.

The 43-year-old had two children, a ten-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son, and his family said he will be badly missed.

Mr Gilbert’s father, Billy Gilbert, said his son’s death had shocked everyone in the family.

He described his son as a "beloved son, father, brother and uncle who will be sadly missed".

Mr Gilbert was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle after the assault which is where he died.

Police are now speaking to the Crown Prosecution Service to review the charges brought against Mr Morgan.
