A POLICE officer has been treated for a head injury after being assaulted earlier tonight.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said the officer approached two men who were acting suspiciously in the Ryton Cemetery, Gateshead, at 8.35pm.
The spokesman said: “One of the men ran away and the other man assaulted the police officer causing him an injury to his head.
“The officer has received medical treatment and has been discharged from hospital.
“We are appealing for anyone who has information or who saw anyone acting suspiciously around the time of the incident to get in touch with the police.”
