A STUDENT has denied sending abusive messages to Stan Collymore on Twitter.

Joshua Cryer, 21, appeared at Newcastle Magistrate's Court today to face charges of sending 'grossly offensive' messages to the football pundit.

The Newcastle University law student pleaded not guilty to one charge of contravening section 127 of the Communications Act 2003.

He is accused of sending, by means of a public electronic network, messages that were grossly offensive between January 5 to 8 this year.

Mr Cryer was arrested by Northumbria Police on January 6 after Mr Collymore, 40, alerted them to two messages he allegedly received on the social networking site.

Wearing a dark blue suit, tie and white shirt, Mr Cryer spoke only to enter his not guilty plea and confirm his date of birth and address.

Mr Cryer gave his address as Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, Lancashire and is thought to live on Fairfield Road, Jesmond, Newcastle during term time.

District Judge Garland granted Mr Cryer unconditional bail until the case comes to trial on April 2.
