A SUSPECTED robber has been released from hospital after being attacked when he reportedly attempted to take cash from youngsters.

Several police cars, armed officers and an ambulance were seen outside a flat on Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road at around 4.20pm on Thursday evening.

They had responded to reports of a robbery on nearby Kensington Road that involved two teenage victims.

Witnesses who watched the incident unfold said that the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, had been beaten with bricks by onlookers after attempting to steal money from the children.

Bystanders initially reported that the suspect had been stabbed during the altercation but there has been no further evidence to support their claims in that respect.

It was said that the injured man had been attacked on Kensington Road before making his way to a flat on Linthorpe Road, which was surrounded by emergency services vehicles and police officers until around 5pm, with a police cordon temporarily put in place close to the Dermagrafix tattoo studio.

The door to the flat was broken and witnesses reported seeing the man taken out of the property with bandages around his stomach.

This morning, a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “Police were called to a report of a robbery on Kensington Road at around 6.20pm on Thursday evening, 17th May, whereby a small amount of cash had been stolen.

“The alleged suspect was reportedly assaulted with a brick, and was taken to hospital following the incident.

“After police enquiries, neither party wanted to make a formal report of a crime and the man was later released from hospital.

“There will be no further police action in relation to either allegation.”
