A MAN in his 40s who was arrested on suspicion of rape yesterday, Thursday, has been released as police inquiries continue.

The 42-year-old was arrested in connection with an alleged incident in an alleyway behind the Boot and Shoe pub, on Church Row, Darlington, on Wednesday night.

Part of Darlington town centre was sealed off yesterday as crime scene officers carried out inquiries. The alleyway which leads from the Joseph Pease pub, on Tubwell Row, to the Boot and Shoe was cordoned off with police tape.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said this morning: "The 42-year-old man arrested on suspicion of rape has been released under investigation."

Inquiries continue and police have asked anyone with any information to contact Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 438 of January 31.
