Thieves use JCB to rip cash machine from wall of Bishopthorpe shop

The ATM was ripped out of the wall of a Co-op store in Main Street, Bishopthorpe, near York, at about 3.05am today.

A JCB was used to tear the machine from the wall, police said.

The raid has left a wide hole in the store.

Police also said the machine was placed into a white Ford Transit van, which was then driven away from the scene alongside a black Audi Q3 towards Acaster Malbis.

"Detectives are on with tracking these vehicles," a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police added.

The JCB, which is believed to have been stolen, was abandoned near the scene. Officers need to trace the owner as part of the ongoing investigation.

As well as causing damage to the Co-op, the raid also caused a water leak which led to the closure of the road. Work is being carried out to repair the damaged pipe.

The spokesman confirmed CCTV has been seized as evidence.

"It will not be released at this stage while active inquiries continue," he said.

A spokeswoman for Co-op commented: "Police are investigating and we appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt but the store remains temporary closed whilst we assess the damage. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will update the community as soon as it is reopen.”
