POLICE are cracking down on 4x4 thefts by issuing free marking kits.

Land Rover Defenders are frequently target by car thieves in rural areas of County Durham, such as Teesdale and Weardale.

But Durham Police is encouraging owners to take a proactive approach to preventing crime by marking their vehicles with International Security Register (ISR) kits. The kits can be used to etch a unique codes on to parts and panels. They usually cost £35 but officers will be marking Land Rovers for free at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart on August 14, 17 and 21.

Special Constable Ross Moralee said: “Although we have a low crime rate, when vehicle thefts do occur, Land Rover Defenders are often targeted. Having several key sections of your vehicle marked with these hi-tech kits make it identifiable and much easier to get the vehicle and parts back to the original owner.“

Vehicles will be marked on a first come first served basis and the owner must live in County Durham.
