DEALING with prisoners in police cells across Teesside has been taken over by a new private company.

Cleveland’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Barry Coppinger said the move will save the force about £1.8m.

Mitie Care and Custody Limited will now provide custody services for those who have been arrested and taken to police cells in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough.

The company will also provide bail management and the identification suite for identity parades.

The new three-year contract, which has the option to extend for a further two years, was awarded following a procurement process. Tascor had previously held the contract for ten years. Current staff will be transferred.

Mr Coppinger said: “This is an extremely important contract, as it is about managing people in complex situations, looking after welfare and ensuring legislation is adhered to.” He said that the move freed up operational police officers. Over 20,000 people are in police custody in the Cleveland area each year.
