TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a popular primary school teacher who suffered fatal wounds during a knife attack in her home.

Mother-of-two Julie Parkin, who taught year three and four pupils at West Boldon Primary School, died in a domestic incident in Sunderland in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called at 12.10pm to Kirkwall Close in the Castletown area follow reports of concern for the 39-year-old

Headteacher Joanne Weightman said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic news.

“She was a highly valued and respected member of staff who was popular with both pupils and colleagues.

"We are working with the Local Authority to offer support to students and staff and will co-operate fully with any police investigation."

Northumbria Police have said Mrs Parkin died in a 'domestic incident between people who knew each other'.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the attack at around 12.10am and remains in custody.

Police last night confirmed Mrs Parkin was the woman who died in the incident.

Detective Inspector Ed Small said: "Our thoughts are with all those affected by the incredibly tragic death of Julie which we know many people will be shocked and saddened by.

"Our enquiries are continuing and a man remains in police custody. We will continue to have extra officers in the area to speak to local residents and offer reassurance."
