THE VICTIMS’ Commissioner said Durham Police needs to do more to support victims of anti-social behaviour.

Baroness Newlove was speaking today after meeting with victims during a visit to Durham Police headquarters.

She said: “Very few of the victims I spoke to today feel supported by the police. The whole purpose of my visit is to go around the country have meetings with the police and crime commissioners and chief constables to report back what victims have been saying to me.

“There has been some positives from the victims I have seen, but sadly the majority don’t feel they have that engagement with the police.

“From the anti-social behaviour I have heard about they are very traumatised. They don’t feel they can report that to the police and they don’t think they’ve got that support.

“I think the police need to do further work.”

Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg said: “Baroness Newlove has given us some interesting feedback. “It is not all good news, as you would expect, and we are going to take up on everything she has reported back to us. "It's all about her coming and giving us that independent perspective to help us understand the experiences of some people.”
