A MAN alleged to have carried out an attack on a 77-year-old man whose life-savings were stolen has been remanded in custody.

Christopher Barnett, 26, of Station Road West, Trimdon Station, was charged alongside another suspect with aggravated burglary.

He appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court last week where no plea was made and he was granted bail.

Police appealed his bail and he appeared at Durham Crown Court on Friday when he was remanded in custody.

The pair are accused of assaulting the pensioner when he was alone at his house in Coronation, near Bishop Auckland, at about 8.30pm on Saturday, January 21.

The pensioner was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released.

The case will next be heard at the same court on February 24.
