POLICE are hoping to deter travelling criminals with the launch of a new machine.

The Dot Peen machine is being introduced by Cleveland Police in the hope it will protect property and help them to convict thieves.

They will be used as part of an initiative targeting criminals moving between the borders of Cleveland and North Yorkshire to commit crime.

Already used by North Yorkshire Police, the innovative machine uses a tungsten carbide-tipped pin to mark objects with a visible and permanent number, which is entered onto a national property register.

Inspector Phil Morris, from Cleveland Police, said: “The new machine is going to be an excellent tool in our fight against crime and in getting stolen property back to its rightful owners.”

Inspector Lee Pointon, of North Yorkshire Police, added: “Working with Cleveland means that life is going to be even more difficult for cross-border criminals, who will find that security-marked property in both force areas is ‘too hot to handle’.”
