POLICE are seeking witnesses after a woman was attacked in Spennymoor this morning.

The victim was walking through the underpass of the A688, in the direction of Merrington View, at 8.20am before she was attacked from behind by a man who attempted to steal her handbag.

The suspect is described as white, around 5’11” tall, of medium build and wearing a grey hooded top with something covering his face.

Officers are trying to trace a woman who may have witnessed the attacker prior to the incident.

The witness was riding a pedal bike through the underpass and is described as a white woman, aged in her 40s, of slim build with short dark hair and was wearing a blue sweatshirt.

The victim believes the name of the potential witness might be Andrea.

DC James Vance said: “This was an upsetting incident which also left the victim with injuries to her leg and face. Thankfully she is now recovering at home, however she has been left extremely shaken.

“We are keen to trace a witness who we believe may be able to help our enquiries and would ask that anyone with information come forward.”
