POLICE are appealing for information after two serious assaults in Newcastle city centre - one in which a man was stabbed and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The first incident occurred just after midnight on Saturday when a 33-year-old man was stabbed outside Lloyds bank at Haymarket Metro Station.

"Emergency services attended and the man was taken to hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries. The area was cordoned off to allow officers to carry out an investigation," said a Northumbria Police spokeswoman.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the attack to get in touch on 101 quoting reference 11 21/08/16.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident and currently remain in police custody.

The second incident occurred at around 1.15am on Sunday where a 40-year-old man was seriously assaulted in Times Square in Newcastle.

"Emergency services attended and the man was taken to the RVI with what are thought to be life-threatening injuries," said the spokeswoman.

"The person responsible for the attack had already left the area when police attended and enquiries are now ongoing to identify and locate the person responsible.

"This is not thought to be connected in any way to the stabbing earlier this morning."

Anyone who saw the attack, or has any information that could help officers, should contact them on 101 quoting log 83 21/08/16.
